Do you get sleepy when the scent of lavender is in the air? Whenever you catch a whiff of a freshy baked pumkin pie, does it remind you of days in the past... perhaps an autumn day in your grandmas kitchen? If so, you've already experienced the basic principles of aromatherapy. The idea behind aromatherapy is to rediscover these individual scents that evoke these positive sensory feelings and emotions and then introduce those scents into our everyday life to enhance well-being. The dictionany describes aromatherapy as "The use of selected fragrant substances in lotions and inhalants in an effort to affect mood and promote health." In practice, aromatherapy utilizes approximately 40 different essential oils, singly and in combination. These oils are used in a variety of ways: They can be mixed with a bland carrier oil (such as a vegetable oil) and applied to the skin during a massage; they may be inhaled; or they can be added to your bathwater. You can do aromatherapy at home by buying the individual oils (they're commonly found at health-food stores and pharmacies) or you can visit a trained aromatherapist, who will work with you to define your needs and customized a blend of oils especially for you. The Essential Aromatherapy site covers a wide range of topics associated with the art of aromatherapy. If you are interested in the historical aspects of aromatherapy you will find it on this site.
